Puzzle: A Visit to the Casino!

There is a casino and it has 4 gates, let say A, B, C and D

Now the condition is that every time you enter casino you have to pay $5 and every time you leave the casino, you again have to pay $5. Also, whenever you enter the casino whatever amount you have with you will get double.

Now you enter the casino through gate A and come out through gate B, again you go inside casino from gate C and come out of gate D, at the end of this process you should be left with no money

So calculate how much money you should carry with you when you enter the Casino?

How boxes are placed?

Let's assume a, b, c and d are the correct numbers in the boxes.



So, 4 equations that we get are,

a + b = 8     .....(1)

c - d = 6     .....(2)

a + c = 13   .....(3)

b + d = 8    .....(4)

Subtracting (1) from (3) gives,

c - b =  5     .....(5)

Adding (2) to (4),

c + b = 14    .....(6)

Adding (5) and (6) gives,

2c = 19

c = 9.5

Putting c = 9.5 in (2),

9.5 - d = 6

Hence, d = 3.5

Putting d =3.5 in (4),

b + 3.5 = 8

b = 4.5

Putting b = 4.5 in (1),

a + 4.5 = 8

a = 3.5

So to conclude, a = 3.5, b = 4.5, c = 9.5 and d = 3.5.

The above statement suggests that 1 man takes 5 days to build 1 house & not 1 man take 1 day to construct 1 house.

So 100 people will make 100 houses in only 5 days as each one completing the task in 5 days!

Here is the question! 

First two equations clearly indicates it must be straightforward a + b equation.

Now if you observe closely all the equations, then you can find that the number never exceeds 8. So there are chances that all these number are in octal number system i.e. base 8 numbers.

Hence 11 in third equation is actually 8 in decimal. That's why 7 + 8 = 15 where decimal 15 is converted to octal 17. 

Verifying third equation as 15 + 16 = 31 in decimal is actually 17 + 20 = 37.

On the similar note, we have fourth equation in decimal as 31 + 32 = 63 which can be converted to octal as 37 + 40 = 77.

Hence the search for number in place of '?' ends with the number 77.

A man buys a horse for $60. He sells the horse for $70. He then buys the horse back for $80. And he sells the horse again for $90. How much profit did he make or did he loose in transaction? Or did he break even?

The confusion starts when he he buys same horse again. But if we look at it as two different transactions then it pretty straightforward.

At first he buys horse for $60 & sells it for $70. Here, he makes profit of $10. This is one transaction.

In next transaction, he buys same horse for $80 & sell the same for $90. Again, here he makes profit of $10.

In this way, the total profit he earns from these transactions is of $20.

Fourteen of the kids in the class are girls. Eight of the kids wear blue shirts. Two of the kids are neither girls or wear a blue shirt. If five of the kids are girls who wear blue shirts, how many kids are in the class?

 Let's recollect all the data given in the question.

1.Fourteen of the kids in the class are girls.

2. Eight of the kids wear blue shirts. 

3.Two of the kids are neither girls or wear a blue shirt.

4.Five of the kids are girls who wear blue shirts.

Now, (3) clearly suggests that there are 2 boys who are not wearing blue shirts. 

From (5) and (2), it's clear that 3 of 8 kids who are wearing blue shirts are boys as 5 of them are girls.

Above 2 conclusions indicates that there are total 5 boys in the class; 2 not wearing blue shirts and 3 wearing blue shirts.

But as per (1), there are 14 girls in a class. 

Count of Number of Kids.


Hence, total 14 + 5 = 19 kids are there in a class.

Lighting Up The Candles

In a group of 200 people, everybody has a non burning candle. On person has a match at lights at some moment his candle. With this candle he walks to somebody else and lights a new candle. Then everybody with a burning candle will look for somebody without a burning candle, and if found they will light it. This will continue until all candles are lit. Suppose that from the moment a candle is lit it takes exactly 30 seconds to find a person with a non burning candle and light that candle.

From the moment the first candle is lit, how long does it take before all candles are lit?

What is the exact situation?

From a moment from first candle is lit, 30 seconds later there would be total 2 candles lit. In next 30 seconds, each of these 2 candle holders will find 1 candle to lit. So there are now 4 candles lit after 60 seconds. In next 30 seconds, these 4 candles would lit another 4 candles making total 8 candles lit. 

In short, for every 30 seconds, the number of candles lit are doubled. So after 7 sets of 30 seconds, 2^7 = 128 candles would be lit. At 8th set of 30 seconds, 256 candles can be lit. But we have only 200 candles. Still 72 of 128 candles would lit another 72 in 8th set of 30 seconds. 

To conclude, 8 X 30 = 240 seconds = 4 minutes required to lit all 200 candles.

Area Of A Fractional Pink Shade


A look at the question first!

Let's first recall the formula for the calculation of area of a triangle.

Area of triangle =  1/2 x Base x Height

Let's assume the side of the square is 1.

Now the triangle with the pink shade & triangle opposite to it are similar triangles. Similar triangles are triangle whose sides are in proportion with each other.

Since here base of pink triangle is double of un shaded opposite triangle, the height of pink triangle must be double of that smaller triangle.

But together, heights of both triangles must be equal to side of the square i.e. 1.

And hence, height of smaller triangle must be 1/3 & that of pink 2/3. (h + 2h = 3 ; h = 1/3).

So,

Area of Pink Triangle = 1/2 x Base x Height = 1/2 x 1 x 2/3 = 1/3.

So the area of pink shaded part is 1/3rd of total area occupied by square.
